WRV Outer Banks Pro Contest is from August 28th - Sunday, September 1st from 7 am - 4 pm.

Spectators are welcome to hit the sand and watch some of the top surfers in the region and the world compete in this late summer competition that promises to be one of the best live shows on the beach. Wave Riding Vehicles has stood for surfing since it was first founded in 1967, and this annual week-long surfing competition continues the celebration of this tradition in both its causal and competitive forms.

The competition takes place on the beach next to Jennette’s Pier in the town of Nags Head, which makes it easy to reach for visitors throughout the central Outer Banks. Vacationers who want to check out the action can take a beach chair or beach blanket to the sand to enjoy the display of amazing athletics and abilities, or can head to the pier itself for a bird’s eye view of the competition in the ocean waves below (There is a fee to enter the pier).

Plan to participate or observe the 3rd Annual Billfish Tournament at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center.  Team fees range from $1000  up to $10,000. The tournament will take place on Sunday September 1 times to be announced. The weigh in and awards will take place September 1 from 3-6 pm. This Fundraiser benefits the Community Care Clinic of Dare and helps to provide Medical, Dental, Pharmacy and Mental Health Services to the uninsured and underinsured members of the Outer Banks Community. 

The Outer Banks Astronomy Club and Jockey's Ridge State Park will be hosting an evening of stargazing to help spread a love and appreciation for the night sky. The event will help showcase the dark skies we have here on the Outer Banks and will be centered around the new moon to further enhance the appearance of many celestial objects.  Equipment will be provided for your enjoyment.  This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to bring their own telescopes.

Join Kitty Hawk Kites for the Labor Day Weekend Bash at Waves Village! This free event is open to the public and features live local music, delicious food trucks, free yoga, fliteboard demos, and special deals at Kitty Hawk Kites and Kiteboarding School.  A portion of all proceeds will support Hatteras Island Meals and Ocean Rescue. Get your Labor Day off to a healthy start! Be the first to run through the newly refurbished Cape Hatteras Lighthouse grounds, surrounding park, and pathway, with stunning views of the scaffolded lighthouse as craftsmen work to complete its renovation. While the lighthouse is still undergoing renovation, this 5K will offer stunning views of the lighthouse, a tour of the surrounding newly designed park, and pathway. The first 200 registrants receive a commemorative shirt, eco-friendly reusable cup and an awesome finisher medal to celebrate your accomplishment.

The best show in town! Browse the amazing works of 24 local artisans in one great space. Three local charities are participating too – N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles), Beach Food Pantry and Coastal Humane Society. Plenty of free parking and free admission to this indoor show.

In September, the Dare Arts Vault Gallery will feature Taylor Williams’ latest collection of oil paintings titled, Hideaway. Hideaway highlights the serene moments of coastal North Carolina and beyond. Taylor's use of soothing, low contrast colors accentuates feelings of tranquility. Her work goes beyond merely capturing the visual beauty of the coast, offering glimpses into the sense of sanctuary that these landscapes provide. It's not just about what you see, but about how you feel—a reminder that amidst the chaos of the world, there are places of quiet refuge waiting to be discovered.
Hideaway will be on display in the Vault Gallery September 6-28, 2024.

Come enjoy Free Friday Night Movies at Dowdy Park. On Sept. 6th, the park will show the original 1996 movie Twister starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. Bring your blankets, beach chairs, and empty popcorn containers. The park will serve FREE popcorn while supplies last!

Dare Arts is excited to screen the 1972  film “What’s Up, Doc?” in The Courtyard this Friday, September 6, from 8:30pm-10:00pm. “What’s Up, Doc?” is a screwball romantic comedy starring Barbara Streisand and the late Ryan O’Neal, and the movie debut of comic great Madeline Kahn.

This is a free, family-friendly event, and we will have free popcorn to give out. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the film!

Don't miss the 5th Annual Soggy Doggy Pool Party, Saturday, September 7th from 10am-1pm at the Outer Banks YMCA in Nags Head! $10 per dog cash or check at the gate. Proof of rabies vaccination is required. All proceeds benefit the Coastal Humane Society Emergency Fund which provides families in need in Dare and Lower Currituck Counties with financial assistance in caring for their pets!

The 18th Annual Currituck Wildlife Festival is a two-day show that features some of the region’s most talented and well-known wildlife artists. Vendors at this years’ event will include decoy carvers, sculptors, painters, photographers and more. The show will be held at the Currituck County High School in Barco, North Carolina from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday (Sept 7) and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday (Sept 8). Proceeds from this event benefit local community members and organizations. Admission is $5 for the weekend.

Day at the Dock takes place along the waterfront that’s adjacent to the village marinas, and is a delightful combination of fresh seafood and good eats, live demonstrations, working commercial fishing boats, live music, kids activities, and more, and is a true and authentic sample of what life on Hatteras Island is all about.

Run the Fishy 5k through historic Hatteras Village the morning of Day at the Docks on September 14, 2024. The Fishy 5k is sponsored by Hatteras United Methodist Church.

The Fishy 5k will start and end at Hatteras United Methodist Church and loop through historic Hatteras Village. Runners and walkers of all skill levels welcome! Come enjoy a morning run and stay to enjoy the events of Day at the Docks, a celebration of the watermen heritage of Hatteras, NC. The Fishy 5k will begin at 8 am. Pushing strollers is allowed, however please start at the back of the corral. Pets are not allowed to participate. Pre-registration is recommended by Aug 27 to receive an event t-shirt. Bodie Island Lighthouse Climbing will be on Monday, August 19 at 8 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
and on Tuesday, September 17 at 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Tickets can only be purchased for the full moon climb starting at 7 a.m. on the day of intended climb. (Aug 19 and Sept 17). The cost is $10 for ages 12 and up, $5 for senior citizens and children 11 years and younger.

On Tuesday, September 17th at 6 PM come enjoy the inspiring story behind the iconic painted horse statues through the mini-documentary “Winged Horses of the Outer Banks,” funded by CurrentTV and produced by Baldwin Video Productions. This unforgettable evening celebrating the winged horses that continue to capture our hearts is free and open to the public.

Following the premiere, witness the grand unveiling of a magnificent new winged horse statue in the Duck Town Park. Hear firsthand accounts from special guest speakers who were instrumental in bringing these majestic creatures to life and meet Riptide, a stallion rescued by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund.

Celebrate 13 years of the Surfalorus Film Festival, presented by North Carolina Aquariums and Jennette’s Pier, taking place during the Eastern Surf Championships, September 16-18, 2024.

This three-day celebration showcases the year's best surfing films, sharing great surf movies from award winning veterans to first-time filmmakers in a supportive and laid-back atmosphere. On Wednesday, September 18 from 2pm to 4:30pm cancer survivors, patients and their caregivers are invited to join artist Catherine Hamill for a free paint-along class at the Cowell Cancer Center in Nags Head. Space is limited to 15 participants. No experience required. This workshop is for first-time painters as well as more advanced painters.

Cost: Thanks to a Community Benefit Grant from Outer Banks Health, this workshop is free for cancer survivors, patients and their caregivers, and all supplies are included. Although the class is free, pre-registration is required so that the instructor can plan ahead for supplies. A producer-only farmers market in Wanchese featuring fresh produce, rotating artisans and so much more. Our family of producers join each market in person to share food and goods that they have grown or crafted themselves, here in Northeastern North Carolina.

An hour and a half scenic drive on the North Carolina coast, from Bodie Island Light Station to Cape Hatteras Light Station! This scenic drive begins at Bodie Island Lighthouse and follows NC12 (pavement only, no beach driving) across Oregon Inlet, through the coastal towns of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton, ending at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, with stunning views of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore the entire route.
