In October our Vault Gallery will feature paintings by Willow Rea Temple. The month-long exhibit, "Little Worlds and Ephemeral Life", is a nod to the bittersweet notes of nostalgia. This series of paintings was inspired by vintage photos of local life with many photo references being sourced from the Outer Banks History Center and others found in friends and family photo albums. Willow uses a variety of mediums and bold colors to weave new tales into past life, making each image a timeless reminder of the brevity of youth. As you look at each character depicted, imagine all the different “little worlds” they live in. Many of our life experiences are unique, but most of them are shared, connecting us all to each other. There will be an opening reception on Friday, October 3 from 6pm to 8pm, where visitors can meet Willow and view her work. The opening reception is during downtown Manteo's First Friday festivities, and is free and open to the public. Little Worlds and Ephemeral Life will be on display in the Vault Gallery October 3 - November 1, 2025. |

We are deeply committed to honesty and sustainability in our practices. Winter Season Markets are every first and third Saturday of the month December - April 5 from 9am -12pm. The 2025 First Flight Holiday Markets will be held on Saturday, November 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A third market is also scheduled for Friday, December 19 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. These events are hosted by the Town of Kill Devil Hills and will feature local vendors at Aviation Park. The exhibit, Inheritance, examines the liminality of sacred places. Ethereal vignettes of ancestral grounds anchor the photography exhibition by Baxter Miller, a descendant of a Hatteras Island family who arrived in the 1700s. Printed and framed oversized on Hahnemühle watercolor rag, the work stands in stark contrast to traditional depictions of landscape.

In celebration of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse (December 1, 1875 – 2025), the Outer Banks Conservationists and The Northern Outer Banks proudly present Joseph Smith, a New York–based living history performer, in two special performances of his one-man play, Augustin Fresnel: Through a New Lens. Through drama and storytelling, Mr. Smith brings to life Augustin Fresnel (1788 – 1827)—the French physicist and civil engineer whose invention of the Fresnel lens transformed maritime navigation by dramatically extending the brightness and range of lighthouses around the world. The original first-order Fresnel lens, installed in the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in 1875, remains one of the last of its kind and is still an active aid to navigation. Both performances will take place at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Corolla. Admission is free, and donations supporting another 150 years of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse are welcome. Soundside Holiday Market provides an amazing opportunity for our talented local artisans, creators, and makers to share their wares, stories, and spirit with Outer Banks visitors and locals alike.
