Monday, August 12th - Friday, August 16th, head to the waterfront docks of Manteo at Pirate's Cove to take part in one of the biggest offshore fishing tournaments of the year at the annual Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament. This event is free to observers. Participant fees can be found on the event website/registration form ($1000-$5000 depending on the number of participants).
Now celebrating its 41st year, the Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament attracts the best anglers from all across the East Coast to the Outer Banks for a full multiple-day fishing tournament, where landing the big catches can result in some amazing cash prizes. From the Pirate’s Cove Marina, teams of anglers will launch to the Gulf Stream to target marlin, meat fish, and other catches that swarm in the warm offshore waters.
Each day ends with celebrations along the waterfront, and the alluring cash prize. Join in the fun or just swing by the docks in the afternoon to see the day’s impressive tallies, and take part in one of the most impressive fishing tournaments on the Outer Banks.

The Town of Kill Devil Hills is proud to present the First Flight Farmers Markets. Featuring around 50 vendors offering a wide variety of goods from produce, sweet & savory treats, woodworking, photography, paintings, jewelry, candles, bath and body items and so much more. You’re sure to find one-of-a kind items for yourself and the entire family! The markets will be located at Aviation Park, 103 Veterans Drive. Parking is available at the park and overflow parking is available at the First Flight High School.
The First Flight Markets are held each Tuesday from June 18 through August 13 from 9 am – 1 pm.
In August the Vault Gallery will feature porcelain pieces by Pamela Lassiter. Pamela's work is inspired by the natural environment of her home on Hatteras Island. The body of work in this exhibition is a reflection of the life and patterns that she sees on the island. The various organic forms and processes develop from studying the oceans movements. Pamela is fascinated by the tide as it ebbs and flows creating dynamic patterns in the sand. These patterns are interpreted through a process of carving and adding coils to wheel thrown and altered or hand built forms.
Sea and Sand will be on display in the Vault Gallery August 2-31, 2024.

Come enjoy stories about legends, folklore, and ghosts of historic Whalehead. Legends, Lore, and Ghost Tours are held Wednesdays at 7 pm. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended. Tours last about an hour and are not recommended for children under 10. The dates are August 7, 14, 21, & 28. The cost is $15.00 per person. There are no refunds for cancellations. It is recommended that participants arrive at 6:45 pm, as the tour starts promptly at 7:00pm and bring a flashlight for their group.

Come learn about the US Life-saving Service. Hear true and amazing stories of daring shipwreck rescues from the Graveyard of the Atlantic by “America's Forgotten Heroes." Did you know the most highly awarded maritime rescue in US history occurred right here on the Outer Banks, August 16, 1918? Local historian, Keeper James Charlet, will give a 15 minute presentation full of facts at the Hatteras Lighthouse Pavillon. This will be the last set of presentations for the season (3:30 pm and 4:00 pm).
To the Rescue Summer Concert is raising funds for the incredible Hatteras Island Rescue Squad! Last year was such a hit and helped fund the HIRS to make very necessary upgrades to keep our population safe! With 80's music by the incredible Raygun Ruby, and a raffle full of very enticing prizes, it's sure to be a rocking good night! Come out and support local heroes and send summer off in a beautiful way!

In honor of the birthday of the first English child born here on Roanoke Island in 1587, Virginia Dare, the Elizabethan Gardens will offer a celebratory admission discount. No other discounts available this day. Admission for children 2 years and younger is free. Admission for children 3-5 years old is $2.60. Admission for children ages 6-17 is$6.60. Admission for adults ages 17+ is $10.60.
