Giant Jellies, by artist Carol Willett, are sculptures on display in Dare Arts Center. This display will be in the outdoor courtyard from September 6 through mid-November.
There is something exquisite about the simplicity of jellies. Their color, shape and size are mesmerizing. This trio of Giant Jellies were created to spark curiosity about these magical creatures. The bells were sculpted over exercise balls, then drilled, sanded, painted and sealed. The colorful tentacles are made from deconstructed bath sponges and recycled beads. The reefs and their creatures are built out of expanding foam and wet sand, plus polymer clay and up-cycled plastic bottles. Electrical conduit, bicycle wheels and plywood make up the armatures.
Children grades Kindergarten through 7th will enjoy the "Hooked on Books Club" in the Manteo Library Meeting Room. Join Ms. Tammy to receive a copy of the current Book Club book. There will be a Trivia Game about the book and prizes! Come Get Hooked on Books!

Join a staff member at Jockey's Ridge State Park Soundside Access for a paddle on the Roanoke Sound. Learn about the sound and estuary portions of Jockey's Ridge State Park. The Road Through “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell:” A Veterans History Project is a documentary series that encapsulates the struggles of serving in the military before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) was repealed. Scott draws on skills as a photographer and a Marine who served under DADT. She invited service members to collaborate on amplifying their voices. Through transcribed interviews and photography, Scott supports participants in unpacking their struggles under policies like DADT and the unique path toward healing. In this exhibit, Scott offers insight into the lives of LGBTQIA+ service members that served before and after the repel of DADT, and she reveals the impact of such discriminatory policies on families and communities today.

On Tuesday, September 17th at 6 PM come enjoy the inspiring story behind the iconic painted horse statues through the mini-documentary “Winged Horses of the Outer Banks,” funded by CurrentTV and produced by Baldwin Video Productions. This unforgettable evening celebrating the winged horses that continue to capture our hearts is free and open to the public.
Following the premiere, witness the grand unveiling of a magnificent new winged horse statue in the Duck Town Park. Hear firsthand accounts from special guest speakers who were instrumental in bringing these majestic creatures to life and meet Riptide, a stallion rescued by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund.

Bodie Island Lighthouse Climbing will be on Monday, August 19 at 8 p.m., 8:30 p.m., 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Toddlers ages 2-3 years old will enjoy Storytime with Ms. Tammy in the Manteo Library Meeting Room. It's never too early to get hooked on books! All August dates have been canceled. Story time will resume in September after Labor Day.
On Wednesday, September 18 from 2pm to 4:30pm cancer survivors, patients and their caregivers are invited to join artist Catherine Hamill for a free paint-along class at the Cowell Cancer Center in Nags Head. Space is limited to 15 participants. No experience required. This workshop is for first-time painters as well as more advanced painters.
Cost: Thanks to a Community Benefit Grant from Outer Banks Health, this workshop is free for cancer survivors, patients and their caregivers, and all supplies are included. Although the class is free, pre-registration is required so that the instructor can plan ahead for supplies. You can register online at DareArts.org/workshops or by calling Dare Arts at 252-473-5558.

Pea Island Bird Walk is a FREE event. Pea Island is ACTUALLY for the birds! This National Wildlife Refuge has close to 400 species of birds that live here or pass through. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll enjoy this casual stroll beside North Pond. Field guides, binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended. Some field guides and binoculars will be available for loan.
Pea Island Bird Walks are held year-round except during the Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival in October and December. Meet at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located on NC Highway 12 approximately 4 miles south of Oregon Inlet and 9 miles north of Rodanthe.

The Endangered Red Wolf Tour is a FREE program. Join refuge staff for a guided program on the endangered red wolf! Tours will begin with an introduction to the history and biology of the red wolf. From there, participants will return to their vehicles and follow staff along the wildlife drive within the home range of wild red wolf family group. These tours do not guarantee that participants will see a wild red wolf, but they do serve as an opportunity to showcase the vast territory of the only wild red wolf population.
Programs will not be offered in inclement weather.

An hour and a half scenic drive on the North Carolina coast, from Bodie Island Light Station to Cape Hatteras Light Station! This scenic drive begins at Bodie Island Lighthouse and follows NC12 (pavement only, no beach driving) across Oregon Inlet, through the coastal towns of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton, ending at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, with stunning views of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore the entire route.
itty Hawk Kites is partnering with Surfrider Foundation Outer Banks Chapter to host a series of beach cleanups this season. Participants will meet at the Soundside Rd. public sound access. Once volunteers have checked in, they will receive gloves and cleanup bags, and will be free to clean up a stretch of beach of their own choosing. All participants will be encouraged to use the Marine Debris Tracker app to log the trash they have picked up.
