There is something exquisite about the simplicity of jellies. Their color, shape and size are mesmerizing. This trio of Giant Jellies were created to spark curiosity about these magical creatures. The bells were sculpted over exercise balls, then drilled, sanded, painted and sealed. The colorful tentacles are made from deconstructed bath sponges and recycled beads. The reefs and their creatures are built out of expanding foam and wet sand, plus polymer clay and up-cycled plastic bottles. Electrical conduit, bicycle wheels and plywood make up the armatures.
Children grades Kindergarten through 7th will enjoy the "Hooked on Books Club" in the Manteo Library Meeting Room. Join Ms. Tammy to receive a copy of the current Book Club book. There will be a Trivia Game about the book and prizes! Come Get Hooked on Books!
Join Dare County Parks & Recreation on Monday, October 28 from 5:30-7:00pm for Kick or Treat Costume Kickball. This event is free to the public however, registration at Park & Recreation is required. This event is for children ages 6-10 years old. It will take place at Lions Westcott Park Softball field. Remember to wear your best Halloween costume!

Meet on the porch at the Chicamacomico Historic Site and Museum and take a walk back to the 1874 Station which housed Surfboat 1046. Hear the amazing story of how that very boat was used in the WWI rescue of the crew of the torpedoed British Oil Tanker Mirlo by the surfmen of Chicamacomico Life Saving Station. This hour long presentation is a family friendly program, free to the public.

Join a park Ranger for an exciting dune hike. This guided hike will take you on a one mile loop hike along the Soundside Nature Trail. Learn more about the environment found at the base of the dunes, including the Roanoke Sound and the unique ecosystem at Jockeys Ridge. Observe plants and learn about the wildlife at Jockey’s Ridge. This hike will take approximately 45 minutes and will meet at the Visitor’s Center Pavilion. Please wear appropriate shoes, sunscreen, and bring water! This is free and open to the public.
Toddlers ages 2-3 years old will enjoy Storytime with Ms. Tammy in the Manteo Library Meeting Room. It's never too early to get hooked on books! All August dates have been canceled. Story time will resume in September after Labor Day.
Come to the Chicamacomico Historic Site and tour the 1907 Midgett House on the Life Saving Station grounds. A Chicamacomico docent will lead the tour. During the tour you will learn how the life-savers and their families lived long ago. This family friendly tour last about an hour and free and open to the public. Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, Frisco Native American Museum, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and The Lost Colony Museum will be sharing tales full of mystery, shivers and chills. Each site will share their own thrilling tales at different times, beginning with Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, Rodanthe from 11-11:45 am. Next, visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum from 1-1:45 pm. Then, check out Frisco's Native American Museum & Natural History Center from 2-2:45 pm. Finally, enjoy the Lost Colony Museum, Buxton from 3-3:45 p.m. Shiver your timbers as Mel Poole shares unsettling and chilling tales!

The Environmental Film Festival takes place in Manteo, North Carolina. The festival is organized by the Peace Garden Project, a gardening and food justice initiative based on the Outer Banks. Pea Island Bird Walk is a FREE event. Pea Island is ACTUALLY for the birds! This National Wildlife Refuge has close to 400 species of birds that live here or pass through. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll enjoy this casual stroll beside North Pond. Field guides, binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended. Some field guides and binoculars will be available for loan.

Ocracoke Island will celebrate colonial life in the 1700s with a living history encampment and the Battle of Ocracoke during Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, on the Berkley Manor grounds. The festival will focus on history, colonial life and family fun. Events will kick off Friday evening at 7:30 in the Berkley Barn with a comedy, adult-oriented game show, “The Dating Game with Blackbeard,” in which comely ladies will vie for the chance to date Blackbeard. Saturday (Nov. 2) will feature a colonial encampment on the grounds of the Berkley Manor highlighting daily life, navigation, cooking and medicine, games for kids and artisan vendor booths. This series of environmental portraits, named “Ocra-broke” exposes the viewer to the other side of living in paradise: the everyday people who work hard and have fun, an island that closes down during the winter months, and the weathered structures that persist through each tourist season. Along with nature filled scenes, Robert loves to find forgotten items and help shine a light on them. To convey his ideas he uses photography, oil painting, and printmaking. Ocra-broke will be on display in the Vault Gallery November 1 through December 21, 2024.
Explore to Learn is an organized, interactive playgroup that allows children and caregivers to participate in coordinated group activities to prepare children for success in school and life.Playgroup facilitators use the Kaleidoscope Play & Learn Curriculum to provide hands-on activities during each playgroup.
Young children (0-5) and family, friends and neighbors who take care of them will meet weekly on Fridays from 10:00 am - 11:30 am in the Play & Learn Library at the Center for CYP in Manteo, 534 Ananias Dare Street.
Explore and learn is FREE. However, due to space limitations, registration is required for each playgroup in order to attend. Registration for each playgroup will be posted on CYP's Facebook page here at 9:30 a.m. on the Monday morning of the week of each playgroup.

The reefs and their creatures are built out of expanding foam and wet sand, plus polymer clay and up-cycled plastic bottles. Electrical conduit, bicycle wheels and plywood make up the armatures.
