“A Thousand Words: Photographs by Vietnam Veterans,” is a collection of photographs taken by North Carolina soldiers and explores the experiences of soldiers during the Vietnam War. Each snapshot is enhanced by commentary from veterans relaying what a photo means to them. This collection was assembled by Winston-Salem photographer Martin Tucker. It lets visitors step into the memories of Vietnam veterans. The exhibit, on loan from the North Carolina Museum of History, is on display at Roanoke Island Festival Park in the ticket sales exhibit space Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Dec. 31. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

This series of environmental portraits, named “Ocra-broke” exposes the viewer to the other side of living in paradise: the everyday people who work hard and have fun, an island that closes down during the winter months, and the weathered structures that persist through each tourist season. Along with nature filled scenes, Robert loves to find forgotten items and help shine a light on them. To convey his ideas he uses photography, oil painting, and printmaking. Ocra-broke will be on display in the Vault Gallery November 1 through December 21, 2024.

The Town of Kill Devil Hills is proud to support our small business community by hosting the First Flight Holiday Markets. There are typically about 50 local vendors that participate in the markets, food trucks, and sometimes live music. Vendors offer a wide variety of goods from sweet & savory treats, woodworking, photography, paintings, jewelry, candles, bath and body items and so much more - you’re sure to find tons of one-of-a kind items for yourself and others!
On December 20 from 6 - 8:30 pm at Traveler's Moon, Dungeon Master, Dudley, will guide participants though an enchanting game of Dungeons and Dragons braving the frigid depths to free an enslaved population and cleanse the ice of the foulest corruption. The flickering candlelight will cast enchanting shadows across the room as the players gathered around the wooden table, their characters ready to embark on a new adventure. Dice clatter and the air is thick with excitement as the faint aroma of incense, heightens the atmosphere of mystery. Registration is required at a cost of $15 per player. Participants will enjoy a FREE gift with registration.

Join a park Ranger for an exciting dune hike. This guided hike will take you through maritime evergreen forest and out to the tallest living sand dunes on the east coast. Learn about the unique ecosystem of Jockeys Ridge and recreational opportunities our park has to offer. Observe plants and learn about the wildlife at Jockey’s Ridge. This hike will take approximately 30 minutes and will meet at the Visitor’s Center Pavilion. Please wear appropriate shoes, sunscreen, and bring water!
Toddlers ages 2-3 years old will enjoy Storytime with Ms. Tammy in the Manteo Library Meeting Room. It's never too early to get hooked on books! All August dates have been canceled. Story time will resume in September after Labor Day.

Hurricane Mo's Bar & Grill will host the "Merry Chris-Mos Merry Maker Market" on December 11 and 18 from 4 - 7 pm. Bus 252 along with other local makers and curators will have items for everyone on your holiday shopping list. Enjoy happy hour and pet selfies with the Grinch. The Mobile Food Pantry will be on site to collect items for their food drive. Enjoy the holidays while supporting the community and local small businesses.
Bring the kids to Dowdy Park for a Candy Cane Hunt on Wednesday, December 11 beginning at 4:45 pm. There will be two different age groups. The younger group will go first followed by the older group. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Pea Island Bird Walk is a FREE event. Pea Island is ACTUALLY for the birds! This National Wildlife Refuge has close to 400 species of birds that live here or pass through. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll enjoy this casual stroll beside North Pond. Field guides, binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended. Some field guides and binoculars will be available for loan.

It's Cocoa with Claus for a Cause! Santa is coming to Southern Shores Dec 20 from 11 am - 2 pm for a magical holiday afternoon, where every cup of cocoa counts! 100% of proceeds support Dare County Special Olympics, helping create opportunities for local athletes. This experience (for a $25 donation) includes a professional photo with our beloved OBX Santa taken by local photographer Katie Slater, a signature SHORE hot cocoa topped with our made-from-scratch marshmallows, and a chance to make a difference in our community athletes. Make memories, warm hearts, and spread joy this holiday season!

Join a park Ranger for an exciting dune hike. This guided hike will take you through maritime evergreen forest and out to the tallest living sand dunes on the east coast. Learn about the unique ecosystem of Jockeys Ridge and recreational opportunities our park has to offer. Observe plants and learn about the wildlife at Jockey’s Ridge. This hike will take approximately 30 minutes and will meet at the Visitor’s Center Pavilion. Please wear appropriate shoes, sunscreen, and bring water!
