Salty Dawgs Lecture Series

Come to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for the museum’s Salty Dawgs Lecture Series, which feature presentations on North Carolina maritime history and culture. These talks are scheduled at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays from June 4 through Aug. 27 in the museum, located at 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras. Topics will be announced as they’re scheduled. Admission to the museum and attendance for the lecture series are free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Call 252-986-0723 for more information.
July 2: Climate Change and Heritage: Join East Carolina University PhD candidate Maddie Roth for an informal lecture on the impact of climate change.
July 9: JR Shanty Company Performance: Come see the JR Shanty Company perform the original and classic sea shanties.
July 16: Hatteras Heroes, History, and Mystery Lecture: What did Alexander Hamilton, Pat Etheridge, Billy Mitchell, Sam Dosier, B.B. Dailey, Billy Mitchell, John Rollinson and other Hatterasmen (and Hatteraswomen) do for Hatteras? They put it on the map! Check out old maps, artifacts, lore, mysteries, history, and old and loved stories with a strictly Hatteras twist with Hatteras historian and storyteller Danny Couch.
July 23: The Lost Colony: Join Scott Dawson, author of The Lost Colony and Hatteras Island, for an informal lecture on what happened to members of “Lost Colony” at nearby Roanoke.

August 20: Screw Pile Lighthouses of North Carolina: The lighthouses along North Carolina’s ocean beaches are famous around the nation, probably none more so than the Cape Hatteras lighthouse at Buxton. But these towers weren’t the only structures that helped mariners navigate our waters during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Join Benjamin Wunderly of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort to learn about a different type of lighthouse, the screw-pile lighthouses, that dotted our internal waters of the Pamlico and Albemarle sound regions. Learn what life was like for the keepers who maintained these true lighthouses.
August 27: Outer Banks Wreck Diving and Photography: Join diver Marc Corbett for a presentation on shallow and deep water wrecks in the area known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic.
