The Sounds of Freedom Juneteenth Celebration

June 19 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Join the Pea Island Preservation Society for an inspiring evening of music, history, community, and celebration at the 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration, The Sounds of Freedom. Held at the historic Pea Island Cookhouse Museum, this special event commemorates Juneteenth—the day marking the liberation of the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The evening will feature live performances by Manteo’s own Tshombe Selby and special guests K Soul & Company, along with a historical presentation by Edward Gantt. Guests can also enjoy complimentary ice cream sandwiches from Surfin’ Spoon, including a vegan option.

In addition to the festivities, attendees will have the opportunity to support local education initiatives through the purchase of limited-edition giclée prints honoring PIPSI founder and President Emeritus Darrell Collins, created by local artist James Melvin. Proceeds will help fund educational programming at the Cookhouse Museum and an aviation science scholarship at Elizabeth City State University.

Bring a chair, gather with friends and family, and celebrate freedom, heritage, and the enduring legacy of the Pea Island Lifesavers through an evening of music, storytelling, and community connection.
