Head to Jockey’s Ridge State Park for a ranger-led one-mile loop hike along the scenic Soundside Nature Trail. This easy walk takes you through maritime thickets, wetlands, and sandy shoreline habitats, offering an up-close look at the plants and wildlife that thrive at the base of the towering dunes. Along the way, the ranger will share insights into the delicate ecosystems that connect the dunes to the Roanoke Sound and why they are so vital to the Outer Banks. This free, family-friendly program is open to the public. Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for a refreshing and educational outdoor experience.

In October our Vault Gallery will feature paintings by Willow Rea Temple. The month-long exhibit, "Little Worlds and Ephemeral Life", is a nod to the bittersweet notes of nostalgia. This series of paintings was inspired by vintage photos of local life with many photo references being sourced from the Outer Banks History Center and others found in friends and family photo albums.
Willow uses a variety of mediums and bold colors to weave new tales into past life, making each image a timeless reminder of the brevity of youth. As you look at each character depicted, imagine all the different “little worlds” they live in. Many of our life experiences are unique, but most of them are shared, connecting us all to each other.
There will be an opening reception on Friday, October 3 from 6pm to 8pm, where visitors can meet Willow and view her work. The opening reception is during downtown Manteo's First Friday festivities, and is free and open to the public.

Whalehead Centennial Anniversary Events
In 2025, Whalehead in Historic Corolla celebrates a century of elegance, history, and community. To honor its 100th anniversary, a special series of ticketed events will take place every Wednesday throughout October 2025, inviting guests to step back in time and experience Whalehead’s charm. The celebrations include intimate behind-the-scenes tours, refined high tea with croquet on the lawn, and enchanting pianist performances echoing through the historic halls. The festivities culminate on October 29th with a grand finale event. Enjoy the fall as we commemorate 100 years of Whalehead’s enduring legacy and the stories it continues to inspire. Guests are encouraged to dress for the era (not required), being mindful of the potential chilly weather. No spiked stilettos for the integrity of the cork floor. Old Trent Market 2025
Returning for its fourth season in 2025, the Old Trent Market is coming once again every Thursday with artists and vendors from all over the Outer Banks region. Continuing well into the fall months, the Old Trent Market features a distinctive collection of gifts, artworks, apparel, local crafts and goodies, and much more. It begins May 15 and runs until October 30 every Thursday from 9 am - 2 pm.

In 1587, English colonists came to Roanoke Island. Come to the Elizabethan Gardens for Pumpkin Carving on Thursday, October 23rd and Friday, October 24th from 10a-4pm to carve a free pumpkin to add to the pumpkin path. OBX-Wind 2025
OBX-WIND 2025 returns October 25 through November 1, hosted by OceanAir Sports in Avon. This high-energy windsurfing race festival brings back the Mega Slalom course and will feature open/limited classes to accommodate all levels. Registration is now open for long distance, slalom, and light-wind races (aka “The Beer Race”). During the week, racers will check in, pick up gear and race numbers, and compete on days chosen by forecasted conditions, including wind speeds are expected to run between 18 and 30 mph. A full schedule with daily races, a raffle to support future events, and an awards party on October 31 is available on the event website. Whether you’re a seasoned windsurfer or just want to soak up the action from shore, OBX-WIND is shaping up to be a can’t-miss celebration of wind, waves, and community.
Dare to Scare 5k & Sweet Treat Fun Run
Date: The race will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2025. Rain or shine event.
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5k begins at Coastal Studies Institute (CSI), Fun Run begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center (VTCC). Check-in will be announced closer to the race. Check-in and late registration at Coastal Studies Institute (CSI). Day of 5k packet pickup will be post race at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center (VTCC).
Location: The 5k run/walk will begin at the Coastal Studies Institute 850 NC-345, Wanchese, NC 27981, and finish at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center, 950 Marshall C. Collins Drive, Manteo, NC 27954. The fun run will begin and finish at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center.
Transportation: Pre-race transportation will be provided for runners who choose to park their vehicles at the finish line. Rides to CSI will be announced closer to the race. There will be no return trips from the VTCC to CSI.

OBX Brewtag 2025
Get ready for winged kegs and big laughs at the 8th Annual OBX Brewtag, happening Saturday, October 25, 2025 at the Soundside Event Site. Modeled after the Red Bull Flugtag, this quirky, fun-loving fundraiser challenges teams to launch and “fly” empty 1⁄6 keg barrels as far as possible—all in the name of flight, beer, and community. Beyond the competition, there’s beer sampling, music, vendors, and plenty of spectator excitement. Net proceeds support the Rogallo Foundation, which preserves the aviation legacy of the Rogallos and is working toward building a museum on the Outer Banks. Free admission for everyone. To participate as a team the cost is $150. Registration is required for participation.

A Night of 1587 Pumpkins
Night of 1587 Pumpkins is an event and Costume Contest. Come dressed to win! Attendees will vote by applause for the winners of each category. to light 1,587 jack-o-lanterns. The evening will consist of trick-or-treating, contests, and of course, pumpkins! Everyone is encouraged to come in costume to enjoy the festivities. Jack-o-lanterns are provided by our community, so come to the Gardens to carve a free pumpkin on October 23rd and/or 24th that will be added to the pumpkin path. Or bring your own carved pumpkin(s) to the event! The event is free with the purchase of a regular ticket. See the event website to purchase tickets.

12th Annual Outer Banks Halloween Parade of Costumes
The 12th Annual Outer Banks Halloween Parade of Costumes returns to Aviation Park in Kill Devil Hills on Sunday, October 26, 2025. The free, family-friendly Halloween party is open to all ages, starting at 2:00 p.m. with trick-or-treating. Decorated vehicles and props on display throughout the park for photos. The walking parade will begin at 3:00 p.m., followed immediately by the judging ceremony for the Best In Show costumes in three categories: age 12 and under, age 13 and up, and groups.
Admission to the event is free. Everyone is encouraged to wear a costume in the spirit of the Halloween season. Politically themed costumes are not permitted. Parking is free. The event happens rain or shine.
Manteo Halloween Island
On First Friday, October 3, Halloween Island kicks off with 13 Nefarious Nights of 13 Halloween Bars, each uniquely themed with its own unique Halloween name and theme. Pick up a HALLOWEEN ISLAND PASSPORT at any of the 13 Halloween Bars and creep your way through Manteo for an exclusive Passport Completion Reward!
