    Finish the year off strong by climbing the ridge!  Hear the story of Jockey's Ridge while taking in the magic of the dunes. Meet at the pavilion beside the park's visitor center. This hike is approximately a .5 mile hike. The event is FREE and open to the public.

    Pack in your outdoor activities by making the shortest day of the year an eventful one. Hike with a ranger and learn all about Jockey's Ridge. This hike is approximately a .5 mile, round-trip hike.  Meet at the pavilion beside the park's visitor center. This event is FREE and open to the public.

    Bring a critter to life this holiday season.  Join Ranger Austin for a fun and informative hour of crafts while learning more about the wild world of Jockey's Ridge. This activity will take place in the park's Community Room.  Recommended for ages 5 and up. Registration is required.

  • Inside the Dunes: Exploration Hour

    Cool off indoors while diving into Jockey's Ridge State Park's fascinating natural features.  This causal drop-in program features animal mounts, pelts, sand samples, fulgurites, and educational games for all ages.  Learn about dune formation, wildlife, and the unique forces shaping Jockey's Ridge. This program is FREE and open to the public.

    Format:  Drop in anytime during the session.

    This program is FREE to the public. Challenge a ranger to a round of target practice with an atlatl.  This is an example of primitive technology Native Americans and early people worldwide used for thousands of years to survive.  Additional games will be set up for visitors to play. This is a great activity for young explorers and big adventurers!

    Recommended for ages 6 and up.  

    Activity will take place near the end of the visitor center's boardwalk.

    Join Ranger Austin for a FREE fun hour learning more about a few of our favorites - the American Black Bear and other furry four-legged friends, tracks, skins, skulls, and especially SCAT!  We will finish the program with a POOP-TACULAR kids' activity, Guess Who Dropped the Dookie!  There will be a SWEET reward for those who attend.

    Recommended for ages 6 to 12.

    Registration is required in advance.  

  • Holiday Star Party 2025

    Jockey’s Ridge State Park will be hosting an evening under the stars on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Telescopes will be set up for public viewing. Kids' activities will also be taking place within the Community Room at Jockey's Ridge State Park. Our knowledgeable partners will guide you across the universe. Food donations are accepted onsite, but the event is free.

    Be a SHINING STAR and support the event by dropping off a canned good for local individuals in need over the holiday season. Friends of Jockey's Ridge members will be collecting donations throughout the evening. Donations will be delivered to Beach Food Pantry.

    Experience the park after dark with this FREE event!  Get out and take a fun and informative hike to the ridge with Ranger Austin.  All aspects of the park will be discussed, including our natural and cultural history, ecology, geology, and more.  We hope you can join us.   

    If inclement weather occurs, an indoor presentation will be offered.
