Killer Dunes 2-Mile Run & Color Fun Run

Kick off your Independence Day weekend with one of the Outer Banks’ most unique and challenging races. The annual Killer Dunes 2-Mile Run invites participants to run, walk, or simply conquer the towering sands of Jockey’s Ridge, the tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast. The course may be just two miles long, but the steep climbs, soft sand, and breathtaking views make it a memorable test of endurance for athletes and casual participants alike.

New for 2026, runners and families can also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Jockey’s Ridge State Park by participating in a festive 1-Mile Color Fun Run beginning at 8:15 a.m. The colorful event offers a fun, family-friendly way to experience the dunes while honoring one of the Outer Banks’ most treasured landmarks.

Proceeds benefit the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge, helping support, preserve, and enhance North Carolina’s most visited state park. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, tackling the dunes for the first time, or simply looking for a memorable holiday weekend adventure, Killer Dunes delivers a one-of-a-kind Outer Banks experience.
