Music lovers come from all over the world for this Outer Banks annual tradition. The Bluegrass Island Music Festival is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year with a number of regional and international bands set to take the stage. The festival is held at the stunning 22 acre Roanoke Island Festival Park overlooking the pristine waters of the Roanoke Sound. Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets and lodging in advance. Multiple ticket options available from $75 per day to $225 for all three days. Daily music schedules available on the event website.

Kayak the Roanoke Sound

Jockey's Ridge State Park 300 W Carolista Dr, Nags Head, NC, United States

Join Jockey’s Ridge State Park staff for a paddle on the Roanoke Sound. Kayak participants will learn about the sound and estuary portions of Jockey’s Ridge State Park. No kayaking experience necessary. However, children under 13 must paddle with an adult 18 years or older. Kayak participants meet at Jockey’s Ridge State Park sound side access. Wings Over Water Festival

The Wings Over Water (WOW) Festival is the Annual National Wildlife Refuge Fundraising event. It offers over 70 birding, paddling, photography, art, and natural history programs. The festival takes place at 6 national wildlife refuges in northeast North Carolina. It is one of the premier east coast wildlife festivals. Locally, many activities take place on National Park Service properties, specifically Cape Hatteras National Seashore, a Festival partner. Knowledgeable activity leaders along with a small participant-to-leader ratio make this a unique experience where participants will not get lost in the crowd. Every festival leader is an expert in their field, volunteering their time, travel and expertise. Wings Over Water leaders come from a range of professions and fields including professors, experienced birders, well-respected botanists, biologist, authors, award-winning photographers, and artists.

Registration is required at a cost of $5.00. Additional fees accrue based on which festival activities participants choose to attend. Activity costs range from $20 -$40.

Patrick Berran Exhibit – Tide Pool

In October, The Dare County Arts Council Vault Gallery will feature abstract paintings and works on paper by Patrick Berran. The title, "Tide Pool", lends itself to the curiosity of looking and exploring the world around you. The works included in this exhibit will showcase a variety of methods to making an image within abstraction.

12th Annual Pumpkin Patch at Island Farm in Manteo

Bring your friends and family to Island Farm for the 12th Annual Pumpkin Patch event. This year the Pumpkin Patch will feature  locally grown pumpkins from Chowan County by a descendant of Island Farm. Visitors can participate in historic games, wagon rides, doll crafting, candle making, free blacksmith shop giveaways, and a new lineup of fall activities. To temp your tastebuds, enjoy the very best open-fire cooked popcorn, hearth-cooked corn cakes, and delicious apple cider. In addition to the farm activities, the farm will host a variety of local art and produce vendors on site.

Ocracoke Working Waterman’s Festival

Join the Ocracoke Preservation Society for the 1st annual Working Waterman's Festival! The festival has activities for the entire family. Enjoy porch talks highlighting the traditions and history of the Ocracoke Watermen. A silent auction benefiting the Ocracoke Preservation Society will take place from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. The festival also hosts a traditional fish fry and bake sale from 12:00 -  2:00 pm (or until supplies run out). Come get a fresh fried fish platter caught and donated by the Ocracoke Seafood Company. After your meal, enjoy a sweet treat ! Come see exhibits and peruse local vendor booths from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. There will be a Raffle featuring a handcrafted ship-in-a-bottle commemorating the 5-masted schooner, the Carroll A. Deering. Artist Jim Goodwin created this historically accurate model from a piece of wood taken from the Deering, which ran aground off of Cape Hatteras, NC in January 1921. The Raffle winner will be announced at 3:30 PM. All Raffle proceeds benefit the Island Inn and Commons project. Make plans to attend!
