Registration is NOW OPEN for the 37th Annual Dare County Senior Games! The 2025 local games will be held from Saturday, April 12, 2025 to Friday, May 9th, 2025 with 50 different sporting events and over 30 different artistic categories. See the event schedule on the event website for a detailed schedule. Event dates and times vary. Participation in the Dare County Senior Games is open to those 50 years of age and older who have lived in Dare County or Currituck County for at least three consecutive months of the year. To be eligible, you must be at least 50 as of the last day of the current year. Proof of age and residency will be required.

Sweep the Beach Trash Art Contest

Kitty Hawk Kites is teaming up with Dare Arts Council to create the Outer Banks Sweep the Beach Trash Art Contest! Submissions accepted from March 1st - March 30th. In conjunction with Earth Day, artists are asked to create work from the trash they have collected from our beaches and sounds. After submission, the artwork will be placed on our TrART Walk at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing. Submissions will be placed on (or around) March 30th. Until April 21st, pieces will be adjudicated and voted on for varying prize categories. Select pieces will be collected and moved to Jockey’s Ridge State Park for Earth Fair OBX, April 22nd, where winners will be announced at the Kitty Hawk Kites booth in Jockey’s Ridge State Park parking lot at 3:45 pm.

Pea Island Bird Walk

Pea Island Bird Walk is a FREE event. Pea Island is ACTUALLY for the birds! This National Wildlife Refuge has close to 400 species of birds that live here or pass through. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll enjoy this casual stroll beside North Pond. Field guides, binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended. Some field guides and binoculars will be available for loan.

Pea Island Bird Walks are held year-round except during the Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival in October and December. Meet at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located on NC Highway 12 approximately 4 miles south of Oregon Inlet and 9 miles north of Rodanthe.

2025 Courtyard Installation: Aeronautical Sea Marks by Christina Lorena Weisner

Spring 2025 Installation: Aeronautical Sea Marks by artist Christina Lorena Weisner will be on display in The Dare Arts Courtyard. The installation will open at 6pm on Friday, March 7 and remain on display through May. This outdoor installation features several geometric structures made from lightweight, weather-resistant PVC pipe and deconstructed fabric from discarded beach umbrellas collected from local beaches by the artist. The cube-like structures vary in size, with some reaching up to eight feet. Their arrangement encourages viewers to move around and in between them, providing a dynamic experience of changing perspectives and spatial relationships within the courtyard. All of The Courtyard events are free, family-friendly and open to the public.

Laron Stallings Exhibit: Of Fur and Feather

In March the Vault Gallery will feature paintings by Laron Stallings. Of Fur and Feather will be on display March 7-29, 2025 in our Vault Gallery. This show is in partnership with the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

The Of Fur and Feather exhibit is inspired by the diverse ecology of eastern NC, and more specifically, the wildlife of the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Through this body of work, Laron explores the unique connections of the wildlife that call this place home. Focusing on the red wolves, bears, and the many birds species of the region, the paintings move the viewer to consider the importance of these wild spaces.
