Come to the Pioneer Theater and enjoy the classic movie The Nightmere Before Christmas. The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown's beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the "real world." When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life -- he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry.

From November through December, the Dare Arts Vault Gallery will feature photography by Ocracoke artist Robert Chestnut. This series of environmental portraits, named “Ocra-broke” exposes the viewer to the other side of living in paradise: the everyday people who work hard and have fun, an island that closes down during the winter months, and the weathered structures that persist through each tourist season. Along with nature filled scenes, Robert  loves to find forgotten items and help shine a light on them. To convey his ideas he uses photography, oil painting, and printmaking. Ocra-broke will be on display in the Vault Gallery November 1 through December 21, 2024. 

Tipsy Turkey 1 Mile Beer Run

Join the OBX Brewing Station crew for the annual Tipsy Turkey Thanksgiving themed beer mile. Admission includes beer, backyard party, chip timing and T-shirt. This is an adult 21 and over only social run. Limit 100 participants. Prizes to the fastest male and female overall. Wear your Holiday finest for a  costume contest. Prizes for most creative. Cost to participate is $45.

Step back in history during this short walk to the actual site of the Wrights’ first powered flights!  Discover why the Wrights chose Kitty Hawk for their flight experiments and what life was like in the Outer Banks; learn about the events that led to the first powered flight on that cold December day, and the lasting impact their first flight continues to have on the world today.

This FREE program is weather-dependent and may be moved to accommodate wind/rain. Check in at the Visitor Center desk for the most updated information.  This 30 minute program recurs every week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from October 6, 2024 until January 2, 2025 at 11 am and 1 pm. Meet on the back patio of the Visitor Center.

Discover the successes and failures of the Freedmen’s Colony and the Civil War battle that shaped it. This is a FREE 20-minute program at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Participants will meet in front of the visitor center.

Wild Turkey Thanksgiving Day 5k & 1 Mile Race at The Whalehead Club

This event is a family and community event in the spirit and fellowship of the holiday. Bicycle lead, Course Marshals, Turn Arrows and a water stop is provided at the Half-way. Open to Runners, Walkers, Wheel Chair participants and Stroller/Jogger Participants. Service Dogs only please). In the spirit of Thanksgiving, canned goods/non-perishable food items will be collected for the local Food Bank.

Registration Fees: Adults $48, Military $45,17 Under $40, Fun Run $29. The fee includes a T-shirt, unique finisher medal, chip timing and post-race light breakfast and snacks. Awards to Top 3 Male/Female in the overall, Top 3 Overall Masters M/F (Over 40) and 1st place each age group at 5 year increments.

Thanksgiving morning is a perfect time to be surrounded by family and friends in the beautiful town of Southern Shores.
