    Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to nearly 400 species of birds that reside here or migrate through. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll enjoy this casual stroll beside North Pond. Field guides, binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended. Some field guides and binoculars will be available for loan. Pea Island Bird Walks are held year-round except during the Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival in October and December. Meet at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located on NC Highway 12 approximately 4 miles south of Oregon Inlet and 9 miles north of Rodanthe. The Pea Island Bird Walk is FREE.

    The Dare County Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee invites the community to its 35th annual MLK Birthday Celebration on Saturday, January 17 at 11 a.m. to 1 pm at Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church (855 US-64, Manteo). This year’s program will feature a musical celebration of Dr. King’s legacy with performances by The Echoes of Heritage and Ascencion Music Academy. The event honors Dr. King’s leadership in the Civil Rights Movement and the enduring impact of his work on people of all backgrounds. The program is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served following the celebration.

    Think you’ve got talent—or just love cheering on local performers? OBX Got Talent returns for Season 3 at The Pioneer Theater in downtown Manteo. Auditions will be held January 24 from 2–4 p.m. and January 25 from 3–5 p.m., welcoming performers of all ages and talents.

    Prefer to be in the audience? Live performance rounds begin January 31, continue February 21, and wrap up with the finale on March 21, all at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through The Pioneer Theater box office and online. Come show your talent or warm a seat and support local stars.
